Be thankful, however: This record launched Dylan’s “Never Ending Tour” and gave us “Death Is Not the End,” which Nick Cave and friends beautifully interpreted a decade later.
New York coffee houses for just 10 months when he got booked at the city’s most prestigious venue, even if it was in the smallest theater in the Carnegie Hall complex and only 53 people showed up. A great recording of half the show has circulated for years, though the inclusion of the previously unreleased “This Land Is Your Land” on the No Direction Home soundtrack seems to confirm that Columbia has the entire set in their vaults.Rolling Thunder RevueThe Dylan camp has released two official live albums from the Rolling Thunder Revue. The first, Hard Rain, is an intense nine-track disc drawn from two May 1976 shows. The other, the Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, cobbles together various songs from the fall 1975 leg. Both have absolutely pristine sound and show the band (led by David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson) in peak form.
You’ve heard the cliché a million times: This is where Dylan “went electric.” And, yes, this is where he went electric. But lost in that stock phrase is that he did so in an incredibly dramatic fashion. One minute he was an acoustic folk icon, the next he was churning out fiery rock ‘n’ roll with stream-of-consciousness lyrics about the futility of politics and the absurdities of the protest movement that previously (and erroneously) thought it owned him. This sounded unlike anything Dylan had ever made, even the second-disc acoustic half with its surrealist paranoia.Dylan’s return to secular music was via this dizzying, hard-rocking album, in which the bard careens between themes of the apocalypse, environmentalism, Zionism, and protectionism over post-punk sonic textures (with the occasional reggae funk sprinkled in). The only thing holding back this record from masterpiece status is the puzzling omission of “Foot of Pride” and, more notably, “Blind Willie McTell,” widely considered one of his greatest songs. Bob Dylan's work will never be done. One day, the artist's body will fail, but his work will live on. Held aloft by mourning tongues and woven into the very text of society itself, Dylan's words and Dylan is a divisive singer and (at best) a mediocre guitarist. So why would he do an album full of covers His refusal to release a single show from the Never Ending Tour, the complete unedited Basement Tapes or countless other legendary bootlegs has led to a very active underground Dylan recording community. To a newbie the sheer amount of material can be overwhelming, but here’s a guide to the best of every era of Dylan’s career. As the man himself sang in 2001, “Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff.”Dylan started as a 'folk' musician but he branched out into many genres over the course of his fifty+ year career, giving us protest songs like "Blowin' in the Wind", surrealistic trips like "Mr. Tambourine Man", pure rock in "All Along the Watchtower", even spiritual songs like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". This ranking allows you to compare classic-era tracks from his thin wild mercury burning 60s period alongside 70s classics from Blood On The Tracks and Desire next to the religious years and other 80s output which actually does have its moments before the later-period comebacks of Oh Mercy, Love And Theft, and Time Out Of Mind. He is truly an inspiring man (no surprise there's an extensive collection of Bob Dylan quotes) who spoke to and for generations through his songs.
Bob Dylan (d. 24 Mayıs 1941 Minnesota), ABD'li müzisyen. Robert Allen Zimmerman (Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham) 24 Mayıs 1941 tarihinde Minnesota eyaletinin Buluth şehrinde bulunan St. Mary's Hospital'de Abram Zimmerman ile Beatrice Beatty Stone'nın oğlu olarak dünyaya geldi It opens with a “snare shot that sounded like somebody’d kicked open the door to your mind,” as Bruce Springsteen described it. And for many other music lovers throughout the last 50 years, that eye-opening rock ‘n’ roll baptism has occurred in similar fashion. No song has had as significant an impact on rock music as “Like a Rolling Stone”—and that’s just the first track on the album. It’s breathtaking, really, how many post-apocalyptic landmarks Dylan crammed into one album (see below). He hisses and scowls like a wild animal, his poetry is combustible and unpredictable. Clichés be damned, this is the sound of Dylan becoming the deity of rock.Dylan’s attempt at a full album of songs co-written with Robert Hunter went much more successfully than the lyricists’ previous collaborations. Never before had Dylan sounded so pissed off and disappointed than on this grunge-blues collection of road songs.

The problem is that neither set represents a single show or includes tracks from the other artists on the tour. After all, the tour was conceived as a multi-artist gypsy caravan across America. For the best complete 1976 show, check out New Orleans 5/3/76. By this point in the tour Dylan’s marriage to his first wife Sara had been severed beyond repair, purging “Sara” from the setlist and replacing it with Blood On The Tracks songs like the snarling “Idiot Wind” and “You’re A Big Girl Now.” You also get a sense of the complete show, with Joan Baez doing her hit cover of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Kinky Friedman doing his signature song “Asshole From El Paso” and Roger McGuinn’s solo take on the Byrds classic “Eight Miles High.” Just an unbelievable night of music that’s worthy of a box set release. And more than any other figure in the history of popular music, Dylan has logged more comebacks than we can count on one hand – which date all the way back to the '60s and go all the way into modern times. That’s a bit of an understatement, and even if it were true the show was largely devoted to Dylan’s catalog. At this Sydney show – which is captured on an absolutely flawless soundboard recording– Dylan is in an unusually chatty mood, telling stories behind songs and lashing out at the rock critics who had been ravaging him. In a nice change of pace from his usual Sixties nostalgia shows, he plays a large amount of new songs – highlighted by “Lenny Bruce,” “Seeing The Real You At Last,” “I and I” and “In The Garden.” The masterpiece here, though, is “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky.” On Empire Burlesque Arthur Baker buries the song underneath layers of horrendous Eighties production, but with the Heartbreakers the song is revealed to be one of the all-time great forgotten Dylan songs. You have to hear it to believe it.
This is the sound of Dylan misguidedly attempting to get hip with the times—a dated album heavy on synths and low on shelf life. By recruiting famed post-disco producer Arthur Baker to lend some slick dance-club instrumentation, Dylan ended up obscuring some truly wonderful songwriting. As an Empire track, “When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky” is a cluttered mess; but as we heard on The Bootleg Series, an arena-sized outtake rendition featuring members of the E Street Band is a lost gem. collection that contains the gist of Dylan's best from the '60s through the '90s, the search is over. The first full album of just Dylan, a harmonica, and an acoustic guitar in nearly three decades. No original songs here, just folk traditionals that feel enchantingly familiar and demonstrate Dylan’s eternal position as professor emeritus of the folk tradition. With rumbling rockabilly, coming-off-the-rails blues, and grungy use of jazz chords, Dylan packs a wallop here, sounding feisty and ready to kick some ass. The lyrics borrow heavily from classic poetry, folk traditionals, and ’40s balladry—spawning allegations of plagiarism—and Dylan comes off sounding like a prophetic soothsayer with a low, inaudible rumble of doom throughout the record. Bonus points for the head-scratching lyrical shout-out to Alicia Keys. In 1975, folk-rock icon Bob Dylan embarked on a concert tour of epic proportions. Perhaps no other album on this list is as hotly debated and discussed as The Basement Tapes. Recorded in 1967 in the basement of the famed Big Pink house in Saugerties, N.Y., this is the sound of post-motorcycle accident Dylan and The Band letting their guards down and just having fun. The mythical sessions were widely bootlegged and produced songs that became hits for The Band, The Byrds, and Manfred Mann, but the official release in 1975 was hurt by overdubs, additional Band-only tracks, and the omission of classics like “I Shall Be Released” and “Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn).” Four decades later we got the mammoth Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete, which proved just how important these sessions were for the history of American songwriting. When he returned he was at the absolute nadir of his career, but with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers serving as his backing band he slowly began to revitalize himself. “I didn’t figure I had much of an audience,” Dylan wrote in 2004’s Chronicles. “As big as the crowds were, Petty was drawing most of the people.” Hey, Hollywood: Bob Dylan is still alive, and so overdone that I'm concerned for our collective creativity. The gang’s all here. One year before officially releasing the legendary late ’60s Basement Tapes, Dylan and The Band reunited to record this ramshackle comeback record, complete with accordions, organs, and screwball Americana influences. Now firmly entrenched in fatherhood, Dylan here birthed one of his most timeless classics: “Forever Young.”The record that started it all. The critical and commercial response was negligible at the time, but Dylan’s self-titled debut provides a clear blueprint for his subsequent folk classics. This is an early glimpse of his gift for emotive strumming and myth-making abilities to adapt traditional melodies into brand-new forms.Visionary in countless ways—among them: one of the first double albums in rock history; epic in length and emotional scope at a time when classic rock was first learning to walk; and an explosive combo of precise Nashville studio-musician instrumentation and Dylan’s bohemian Greenwich Village sensibilities. Our hero uses words as music, twisting and turning them into juggernaut phrases, while the rock ‘n’ roll backing sizzles with energy he—or countless others—has yet to match again.Toronto, 1980Dylan may have faced some backlash when he toured with an electric band in 1965, but it was nothing compared to what he dealt with 15 years later. After converting to Christianity and cutting an album of born-again songs, Dylan hit the road singing only the new material. He also preached from the stage. “I told you ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ and they did!” he told a crowd in New Mexico. “I said the answer was ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ and it was! And I’m telling you now, Jesus is coming back, and he is! And there is no other way of salvation.”
Charlotte, 12/10/78Few eras of Bob Dylan’s live career have a worse reputation than the 1978 tour. Backed by an 11-piece band, the show featured radically rearranged versions of Dylan’s greatest hits – with lots of saxophone and back-up singers. Just weeks into the tour Columbia taped Bob Dylan At Budokan, which was originally only supposed to come out in Japan. Cringe-worthy, slick versions of “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Blowin’ In The Wind” sullied Dylan’s reputation as a live performer for years to come, but when the tour came to America many months later it finally hit a groove. By this point Dylan was playing songs from Street Legal, which was recorded with his touring band. Unlike most of his catalog, these tracks were actually enhanced by the big band. On this tape from Charlotte, Dylan is on fire as the band plays killer versions of Street Legal tracks “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power),” “We Better Talk This Over” and “Changing of the Guards.” With the exception of “Señor,” he’d play virtually nothing from the drastically underrated Street Legal over the next three decades. The Best of Bob Dylan. The Best of Bob Dylan is a single-disc compilation album containing songs by Bob Dylan, released on November 15, 2005 In a single overnight recording session, Dylan emptied several bottles of Beaujolais and laid down this entire record. Or so the legend goes. His first post-“protest music” album, Another Side indeed showcases another side of the musician—one that was annoyed by the preening protest-folk movement and more concerned with existential crises. Here the world was introduced to Dylan as a symbolist poet of the road, a Rimbaud-meets-Kerouac, if you will. In the year and a half since his Carnegie Hall show, the 21-year-old had developed incredible confidence onstage, regularly causing the crowd to break into laughter or listen to his words in absolute silence. Writing in the New York Times, Robert Shelton gave the show a rapturous review. “Mr. Dylan’s mastery of mood built up an almost physically discomforting intensity in ‘Ballad Of Hollis Brown,’ a song about death on a South Dakota farm,” he wrote. ” ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ about the pollution of the atmosphere with fallout, generated similar tensions through repetition and an inexorable guitar beat.” The pristine bootleg is far and away the best recording from this period of Dylan’s career.Look, the music here isn’t bad, per se. In fact, it’s mildly refreshing to hear a 68-year-old Dylan goof around for 42 minutes of unabashed yuletide joy (you can thank this record for the bizarro “Must Be Santa” music video). But, call me a grinch, this record is just downright inessential—even in December.

Bob Dylan Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, artist and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation. Nevertheless, early songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’“ became anthems for the American civil rights and anti-war movements. Leaving his initial base in the American folk music revival, Dylan’s six-minute single “Like a Rolling Stone” altered the range of popular music in 1965. This is the album that served as the basis for Dylan’s ramshackle Rolling Thunder Revue tour, during which he donned white face-paint and a large fedora and set out on the road with a caravan of like-minded collaborators. Scarlet Rivera’s piercing gypsy-folk violin, a hefty dose of tambourine-and-snare snaps, and Dylan’s melismatic vocals accompany towering allegories, epic adventures, and some (misguided) historical revisionism for what we’ve described as his “sloppiest masterpiece.” Bob Dylan: Musician, 66, Everywhere. While the rest of his peers rioted at the 1968 DNC, marched on Washington, and experimented with drugs, a domesticated Dylan went to Nashville and immersed himself completely in country music. He recorded with Johnny Cash and dropped the nasal snarl of previous records in favor of a smooth country croon. Some say this album birthed country-rock, though that honor really goes to Gram Parsons and The Byrds a year earlier—which, lo and behold, was indebted to the then-unreleased Basement Tapes. No, the circle won’t be broken.Often lost amidst all the craziness is the fact that the new songs were great, the band was amazing and he was singing with more gusto and conviction than he’d ever shown before. At this Toronto stop (which was also videotaped), he opens with “Gotta Serve Somebody” and rips into gospel classics like “Precious Angel” and “Slow Train.” Guitarist Fred Tackett, drummer Jim Keltner and keyboardist Spooner Oldham form the core of one of Dylan’s all-time great backing bands, and the finale of “Pressing On” is positively chilling.
