Anna Pavlovna Pavlova, born Anna Matveyevna Pavlova (Russian: Анна Матвеевна Павлова [ˈanːə mɐtˈvʲe(j)ɪvnə ˈpavləvə]; February 12 [O.S. January 31] 1881 - January 23, 1931), was a Russian prima ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries Once she left the Imperial Ballet in 1913, her frontiers were extended. For the rest of her life, with various partners (including Laurent Novikov and Pierre Vladimirov) and companies, she was a wandering missionary for her art, giving a vast number of people their introduction to ballet. Whatever the limitations of the rest of the company, which inevitably was largely a well-trained, dedicated band of young disciples, Pavlova’s own performances left those who watched them with a lasting memory of disciplined grace, poetic movement, and incarnate magic. Her quality was, above all, the powerful and elusive one of true glamour.

Her mother, Lyubov Feodorovna was a washerwoman and her stepfather, Matvey Pavlov, was a reserve soldier. The identity of Pavlova's biological father is unknown, though some speculate that her mother had an affair with a banker named Lazar Poliakoff. As a child, Pavlova preferred to believe she was a product of an earlier marriage. She told people her mother had once been married to a man named Pavel, who died when she was just a toddler. Yet this Pavel remains something of a mystery to historians and biographers.

  1. Pavlova’s independent tours, which began in 1914, took her to remote parts of the world. These tours were managed by her husband, Victor Dandré. The repertoire of Anna Pavlova’s company was in large part conventional. They danced excerpts or adaptations of Mariinsky successes such as Don Quixote, La Fille mal gardée (“The Girl Poorly Managed”), The Fairy Doll, or Giselle, of which she was an outstanding interpreter. The most famous numbers, however, were the succession of ephemeral solos, which were endowed by her with an inimitable enchantment: The Dragonfly, Californian Poppy, Gavotte, and Christmas are names that lingered in the thoughts of her audiences, together with her single choreographic endeavour, Autumn Leaves (1918).

I was a Cecchetti Method ballet student in Perth in the 1960s. A friend of my teacher, Mavis Rosewarne Holdcroft, was a Mrs Yulverton. Unfortunately I do not know her first name, but she was a member of a prominent Perth family and a balletomane of the old style. I remember Mrs Yulverton reminiscing about having supper with Anna Pavlova at the Palace Hotel in Perth where they were served with the ubiquitous meringue dish created for the dancer.--> Но потом Анна взорвала эти 130 секунд танца, окрасив его трагедией гибели. No one knows who first created the famous dessert Pavlova.  But the name and the recipes first began appearing soon after Russian prima ballerina and choreographer, Anna Matveyevna Pavlova (1881-1931), began touring across America, Europe, and the UK in 1910.  In America, she danced at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.  Anna Pavlova was one of the most celebrated and influential ballet dancers of her time.Pávlova cambió para siempre el ideal de las bailarinas. In 1911, Pavlova took a major step in her career—by forming her own ballet company. As a result, Pavlova was able to retain complete creative control over performances and even choreograph her own roles. Pavlova put her husband, Victor Dandré, in charge of organizing her independent tours. For the final two decades of her ballet career, she toured with her company all over the world, as little girls watched in awe and were inspired to become dancers, the same way she had been at the Mariinsky Theatre all those years ago.

  6. Well, I just wanted to let you know that while I now have a contender for ‘pavlova ice-cream’ – I am more excited to reveal that I’ve discovered a pavlova glace recipe which significantly pre-dates any of the first pavlova recipes which emerged in the southern hemisphere by some 15 to 18 years. The recipe I discovered is called ‘Strawberries Pavlova.’  Essentially, it is a cheeky. red berry glace, or ice.  Although Strawberries Pavlova emerges in Auckland, NZ in 1911 and three weeks later in Oamaru, NZ – it is not a New Zealand dish.  This dessert is a northern hemisphere presentation.  I made it a month ago and have attached a photo for you to see.  Its arrival in the culinary dialogue effectively alters foodways history and begs the question, is the Antipodean Pavlova origin story even true?

The whole point of a pavlova is that it is not just a meringue crust. It’s the soft part inside that counts. All those fake pavlovas (from 1604 onwards) get this wrong. Since we began researching, we have discovered that there were British, European, and American Pavlova-named desserts and savory dishes well before any Antipodean dessert namings.  We also discovered that the famous Antipodean ‘Pavlova Cake’, is in actual fact, a re-branding or appropriation of Germanic tortes which were modernized in the American Midwest by the 1860s.  Claims that the Pavlova was invented in the southern hemisphere (Australia and New Zealand) are entirely false; the United States had Pavlova-like tortes first! Pavlova’s personal life was undramatic apart from occasional professional headlines, as when, in 1911, she quarreled with Mordkin. For some time she kept secret her marriage to her manager, Victor Dandré. The pair never had children; however, in 1920, Pavlova founded a home for Russian refugee orphans in Paris. She loved birds and animals, and her home in London, Ivy House, Hampstead, became famous for the ornamental lake with swans, beside which she was photographed and filmed, recalling her most famous solo, The Dying Swan, which the choreographer Michel Fokine had created for her in 1905. These film sequences are among the few extant of her and are included in a compilation called The Immortal Swan, together with some extracts from her solos filmed one afternoon in Hollywood, in 1924, by the actor Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.Pohja jäi sinnikkäästi kiinni leivinpaperiin, vaikka paistoin kiertoilmauunissa peräti 2 h/100 astetta. At the Imperial Ballet School, Petipa and Pavlova's teachers, Ekaterina Vazem and Pavel Gerdt, quickly recognized her extraordinary gift. A dedicated and ambitious student, Pavlova knew a successful ballet career would require a lot more than just talent. Her natural gift for dance, combined with her tireless work ethic, is here summarized in her own words: "No one can arrive from being talented alone. God gives talent, work transforms talent into genius." In 1899, Pavlova graduated from the St. Petersburg Imperial Dance School at the age of 18—gracefully leaping from school to stage in her hard-earned transformation from ballet student to prima ballerina in the making.Pavlova's career soon blossomed. With every performance, she gained increasing critical acclaim and subsequent fame. But it was in 1905 that Pavlova made her breakthrough performance, when she danced the lead solo in choreographer Michael Fokine's The Dying Swan, with music by Camille Saint-Saëns. With her delicate movements and intense facial expressions, Pavlova managed to convey to the audience the play's complex message about the fragility and preciousness of life. That year, with a few other dancers, she went on a European tour to Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, and Prague. She was acclaimed, and another tour took place in 1908. In 1909 the impresario Serge Diaghilev staged a historic season of Russian ballet in Paris, and Pavlova appeared briefly with the company there and later in London.

1926 – Keith Money, a Pavlova biographer, wrote in his 1982 book, Anna Pavlova: Her Life and Art, that a chef at a hotel in Wellington, New Zealand created a dessert dish for Pavlova when she visited there in 1926 on her world tour. The hotel chef was inspired by her tutu that was draped in green silk cabbage roses. The basic shape of the tutu was provided by a meringue case, while the froth of the skirt’s net was suggested by whipped cream.  To achieve the effect of the green roses the enterprising chef used slices of kiwifruit, then known as Chinese gooseberries. In other words, she bypassed the usual initiation rite of dancing in large groups and was permitted to dance in smaller groups right away. Fresh out of dance school, on September 19, 1899, the gifted young ballerina made her company debut, dancing in a group of three in La Fille Mal Gardée. The performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg—the same theater where, as a child, Pavlova had first decided to become a dancer.
